Wood Fence and Matching Gate in Orlando
This Orlando homeowner wanted a wood privacy fence with a gate that looks like part of the run, not a separate piece stuck in the middle. Everything on this install was built on site.
Why does a matching wood gate matter on a wood fence?
A wood fence is a design statement whether the owner intends it that way or not. When the gate does not match the fence, that mismatch is the first thing you see from the street. On a lot of jobs the gate ends up being a prefabricated panel dropped in between two custom built runs, and it never looks quite right. We build every gate on site to match the fence it sits in. Same picket spacing, same picket height, same top and bottom rail heights, and same construction style. On this Orlando install the wood gate carries through the same visual line as the rest of the wood run, so from the front of the yard the whole line reads as one continuous fence. That kind of consistency is what people mean when they say a fence looks custom, and it is the reason we do not use prebuilt panels anywhere on our jobs.
How does the gate hardware hold up long term?
A wood gate sags. It is one of the most common failure modes on a residential fence. The reason is almost always the same. Cheap hinges give up under the weight of a full picket gate, the gate racks in the frame, and eventually the latch stops meeting the strike. We spec heavier duty hinges on every gate we build, with three hinges instead of two on any gate over four feet wide, and stainless or hot dipped galvanized hardware so the components do not corrode in the Central Florida humidity. The latch is set for smooth operation from either side of the gate. The gate posts on this install are set 3 feet deep in concrete like every other post, and they are oversized relative to the picket line so they can carry the swing load without moving over time. That hardware and post work is what keeps the gate cycling clean years down the line.
What does the finished fence and gate look like from the yard?
The three photos on this project show the back of the run, a close up of the pickets, and the wood gate closed into the run. The gate close up shows the picket spacing carrying through cleanly from the fence into the gate frame. There is no visual break where one ends and the other begins. From the back of the yard the run holds a straight top line and the pickets sit at uniform height across the whole distance. Wood is our highest wind rated fence at up to 100 mile per hour gusts and the pressure treated pine we use carries a manufacturer warranty against insect infestation.
