Why board on board wood for an Orlando backyard?
Board on board is a construction style where each vertical picket overlaps the picket next to it by an inch or so. The result is a wood fence with no gaps to look through and no daylight coming across the yard. For an Orlando property with a boat parked in the side yard, that privacy is not just a comfort thing. It keeps the boat, trailer, and any gear stored under the awning out of the direct view of the street and the neighboring yards. Pressure treated pine is the wood we use for this construction because it takes the Central Florida climate without checking or rotting the way an untreated wood would. The material carries a manufacturer warranty against insect infestation, which is one of the more common failure modes for wood fences down here in a state with a serious termite population.
How does board on board hold up in the Orlando climate?
Any wood fence in Florida is going to move a little. The boards expand and contract with temperature and humidity, which means the joints between boards open up in the dry stretch and close back down in the summer wet season. Board on board handles that better than butted board because the overlap absorbs the movement without opening a visible gap to the yard. Wood is also our highest wind rated fence, holding up to 100 mile per hour gusts in the pressure treated construction we use. That matters in a state that gets a named tropical system every couple of years. Every post on this install is set 3 feet deep in concrete, and we use 4 by 4 pressure treated posts on wood fence to match the picket construction. The boards themselves are nailed with hot dipped galvanized fasteners so the wood does not stain around every nail head.
What does the finished backyard look like with the boat parked inside?
The two project photos on this install show the back of the property with the boat in view, and a close shot of the fence line itself. The overlap pattern on the pickets is visible in the close shot and the whole run reads as a solid wall of wood from the ground to the top rail. The boat sits inside the fence in the wider photo, which was the point. Wood weathers to a silver gray tone over a couple of years if left untreated, or holds a warmer honey brown for longer if the owner puts a stain on it. Either finish looks right in a lake life Orlando neighborhood.
