Wood Board on Board Backyard Fence in Maitland
This Maitland property had a shed already tucked in the back corner and a long straight run of yard that needed a proper privacy fence. We built the perimeter in board on board wood and made the shed feel like part of the design.
What was the layout of this Maitland backyard install?
Maitland is one of those towns where the lots are generous and the neighborhoods are shaded by mature oaks, whether you are over near the Maitland Art Center or up in the older streets north of Lake Lily. This backyard was a long, mostly flat rectangle with a wooden shed already sitting in one back corner. The homeowner wanted the whole run closed off in wood, and they wanted the shed to end up feeling like it was inside the yard rather than sitting up against the property line as an afterthought. We walked the line, marked where the fence would meet the shed corners, and planned the runs so the shed became a defined feature of the fenced backyard rather than an obstacle for the fence line to work around. That kind of planning happens on the estimate walk, not on install day.
How do we get a wood fence line dead straight across a long run?
A wood fence that reads straight is not built to a rough estimate. Every post on this install went in on a string line pulled from corner to corner, checked at each hole location before the auger drops in the ground. That string is the reference for the whole run. If a post lands even an inch off the string in either direction it will read as a wave in the finished top rail from thirty feet away. Every post here set 3 feet deep in concrete, plumbed with a full 4 foot level clipped to the post so the whole face is true, and only left when the concrete had firmed up enough that a tug on the post did not shift it. That patience is what separates a straight fence from a fence that snakes down the property line. On this install the top rail carries clean across the whole length without a visible dip.
What does the shed look like inside the finished fence?
The three photos on this project show the full run across the yard, the corner where the fence meets the shed, and a shot of the string line during install. The full run photo tells the story on the straightness. The shed shot shows how the fence line ties into the corner of the shed to make the shed read as part of the fenced yard rather than a separate object. The string photo is the one most people never think about but it is the reason the finished fence looks the way it does.
