What does Florida pool code actually require of a fence?
Every homeowner who buys a house with a pool in Orlando eventually finds out the same thing. The pool needs a barrier that meets specific measurements or the property will not pass inspection. The state code is not complicated but it is not optional. The barrier around a pool must be at least 48 inches tall from grade. Any gate in the barrier must swing outward, away from the pool. This install runs a code compliant pool barrier around the pool deck of an Orlando home. The two photos show the left and right side of the run, both taken from the pool side looking out. Every post on this fence is set 3 feet deep in concrete. The gate hardware is stainless self closing with a magnetic latch that rides at the required height so the child safety spec is met at every point. We took the run tight enough to the pool that the family still had usable deck space but far enough back that a swimmer coming out of the water would not immediately be up against the fence. Ground clearance under the fence line is set below the code maximum so nothing small can slip through. Every measurement was taken with a tape on the day of the install and the finished fence was walked and checked before we called the job done.
What does a family get from a code compliant pool fence?
The obvious answer is that the pool barrier passes inspection. The less obvious answer, which is the one that matters more, is that a family with a pool gets the peace of mind of knowing the barrier around the water is functionally working every hour of every day. A self closing gate that actually returns to closed is a very different thing from a gate that gets left open because the kids forgot.
